Do-it-yourself home makeovers are all the rage right now. With Youtube channels devoted to teaching novice remodelers how to complete projects, to shows on HGTV that get your wheels turning, it’s no wonder homeowners are choosing to DIY more and more. However, it’s important to know your limits and not be afraid to call for reinforcements if you get in over your head. At Indy Renovation, we would love to take on your bathroom remodel from start to finish, but we know there are a few tasks that are better suited for DIY. Here’s a breakdown to give you an idea.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

DIY Projects

Even if you have never completed a single home improvement project, there are several small projects that you can likely handle. Changing your faucets, towel racks, showerheads, and cabinet knobs are all straightforward projects that come with simple instructions. Additionally, updating your lighting is easy to DIY as long as you use caution and follow the instructions. Painting can usually be done by anyone and is such an easy way to transform a bathroom. We recommend choosing a semi or high-gloss paint that will perform well in a moist and humid environment. Finally, if you’re up for more of a challenge, you can replace your own toilet. Just make sure you know how to turn off the water to the toilet, and the tank is emptied before you remove it.

Professional Projects

Projects better left to the pros are typically ones that require reconfiguring the layout or anything to do with plumbing. Relocating or replacing the plumbing isn’t typically something the average homeowner can handle, especially when access to the pipes is limited. Running new electrical should also be handled by a professional as electrical mistakes can be both dangerous and costly. Most DIYers would also agree that custom tile work is best handled by a pro as you can often tell the difference between a professional and a DIY installation in the quality of the final product. And finally, if you plan on installing a heated floor to make your bathroom more luxurious, it’s best to let a pro do it.

If you are confident in your DIY skills and enjoy the challenge, then we wish you the best of luck!
