Fall has arrived in Indiana. The air is crisp, the coffees are pumpkin-flavored, and the leaves are falling. Unfortunately, along with all the beauty that arrives with fall comes several plumbing issues that tend to creep up as the seasons change. That’s why our team at Indy Renovation recommends a little preventative maintenance against these three common plumbing problems this fall to keep your pipes running smoothly all through the winter.
1. Blocked Drains
While it’s true that autumn leaves in Indiana are beautiful, they are also quite a nuisance. They collect in the most inconvenient places and cause issues around your house. One such issue is when they blow into your drains, break down, and get into your plumbing. This causes blockages in your pipes which then leads to slow draining. To combat this issue, we recommend installing a drain cover outside your home to fully keep debris out. It is also a good idea to get into the habit of keeping leaves, branches, and other yard debris away from your foundation.
2. Water Heater Problems
Your water heater had a nice long summer break but will now have to work a lot harder as the temperatures drop. The cold water that flows into the water heated to be warmed may be as many as 25 degrees colder than it was in the summer. Because of this, the risk of your water heater overheating or completely failing is much higher, especially if your unit is older or poorly maintained. Our water heater experts can work with you this fall to insulate, repair, or replace your water heater to make sure you have comfortably heated water this fall.
3. Clogged Gutters
Finally, you probably knew that your gutters may clog in the fall, but did you know that it can affect your plumbing? If you neglect your gutters and downspouts this fall, rainwater cannot drain off your roof to a designated location. This may cause water to overflow into your foundation or your basement which can then overwhelm your sump pump and flood. Keep water away from your home this fall by keeping those gutters flowing freely.
