Fall Plumbing Checklist

However, as refreshing and beautiful as fall is, it can quickly become a headache for a homeowner if you are not prepared. To make sure your home is ready for both falling leaves and falling temperatures, be sure to check on the following items.

1. Drains and Gutters

Those beautiful red and orange leaves quickly turn to harmful brown sludge when left in your drains and gutters. And, over time, that buildup can create a dam that prevents water from going down and away from your home. All of that debris can also affect your sewer lines, creating a swampy, stinky home that isn’t the best environment for your annual Thanksgiving gathering.

2. Water Heater

Water heaters and water heater pressure relief valves need to be inspected and cleaned annually at the very least. However, most homeowners wait until there is a problem before calling a professional. Do yourself a favor and stop a problem before it starts. 3. Pipes

Outdoor faucets can create serious plumbing problems in colder temps if you don’t prepare them properly. Turn off the inside water supply line, and then open the hose connection to allow excess water to drain out. If your home doesn’t have frost-free hose connections, consider swapping them out before winter hits or insulating them.
