Every homeowner needs a water heater they can rely on. Each water heater is built differently and, depending on how well it’s been maintained, can last anywhere from five to 20+ years. To prolong the life of your water heater and keep it working in top shape, our team at Indy Renovation has put together three tips for you to follow.

Hot Water Heater Tips

1. Know Your Water Heater

Do you know where your water heater is located and what type it is? It is important to not only know where it is, but also be sure that you have clear access to it. Additionally, you should know whether your water heater is natural gas, electric, or propane, and whether it’s a storage tank type or a tankless type. We also recommend writing down the model number and serial number so you have it available for warranty purposes.

2. Know How to Turn Off Your Water Heater

Should you ever have a problem with your water heater, it’s important to know how to know how to shut off the water and power supply to the water heater. This way, if your water heater is leaking or you smell gas, you can turn it off and call a professional before more damage is done.

3. Complete a Water Heater Inspection Yearly

Every year, inspect your water heater for signs of damage. Start with the top of your water heater and check for any leaks or heavy corrosion on the pipes and valves. Check the thermostat and the area below the thermostat, where the gas chamber is located. Finally, if you notice any black residue, soot, or charred metal, this is a sign you may be having combustion issues, and that you should have the unit serviced by a professional.

Follow these tips to help prolong the life of your water heater. And when you need assistance, save time and money on the plumbing projects and pipe repairs by hiring reputable plumbers who are licensed, insured, and bonded. Indy Renovation fits the bill.
