How to Protect Your Plumbing during the Hot Indiana Summer

As temperatures rise during the scorching summer months, it becomes crucial to ensure that your plumbing system is adequately prepared to handle the heat. Extreme heat can have a significant impact on your pipes, fixtures, and overall plumbing infrastructure. By taking proactive steps, you can minimize the risk of plumbing issues and enjoy a hassle-free summer. Continue reading to learn more from the team at Indy Renovation.

Check Outdoor Faucets and Hoses

Inspect and test your outdoor faucets and hoses for any signs of leaks or damage. Freezing temperatures during winter can cause cracks or leaks, which may go unnoticed until the hot weather arrives. Turn on each faucet and check for leaks, and replace any damaged hoses or washers as necessary. It’s also a good idea to invest in insulated faucet covers to protect outdoor fixtures from excessive heat.

Protect Exposed Pipes

Exposed pipes, such as those found in basements, crawl spaces, or outdoor areas, are susceptible to extreme temperatures. Insulate these pipes with foam pipe insulation or heat tape to prevent them from expanding, cracking, or bursting in hot weather. Proper insulation will help maintain consistent water pressure and reduce the risk of costly water damage.

Monitor Water Pressure

High water pressure can strain your plumbing system, leading to leaks or bursts, especially during hot weather. Use a water pressure gauge to measure the pressure coming into your home. If it exceeds 80 psi (pounds per square inch), consider installing a pressure-reducing valve. Regulating the water pressure will protect your pipes, fixtures, and appliances from unnecessary stress and potential damage.

Maintain Your Water Heater

During hot weather, you may not rely on your water heater as much as you do in colder months. However, it’s still essential to maintain it properly. Flush the water heater tank to remove sediment buildup, as it can affect efficiency and potentially lead to malfunctions. Additionally, check the pressure relief valve to ensure it is functioning correctly.

Be Water-Conscious

Hot weather often leads to increased water usage, with activities like watering lawns, filling pools, and taking more showers. While it’s important to stay hydrated and cool, being water-conscious can help minimize strain on your plumbing system. Avoid excessive water usage, fix any leaks promptly, and consider using water-saving devices, such as low-flow showerheads and faucets.
