How to Pick the Right Bathroom Lighting

If you’re remodeling your bathroom, the right lighting makes a big difference—both in design and in functionality. Your head may be swimming with all your options (LED, incandescent, fluorescent, and so on), so let our team at Indy Renovation offer a few tips for determining the right light.

1. Know your options.

You can find thousands upon thousands of lighting options out there. Even choosing the right light bulb can be a stressful experience. We recommend that you first familiarize yourself with the various lighting options and what each one of them achieves. Here’s a basic rundown (for more details, check out this article from HGTV, or just talk to our remodeling team):

  • Incandescent: These bulbs emit a warm light that most people find pleasant; plus they’re relatively inexpensive, which may be why they’re the most common bulb found in homes. However, incandescent bulbs are not necessarily the most energy efficient ones out there.
  • Halogen: A halogen bulb is similar to incandescent, but it emits a white light that is meant to imitate daylight. Many people find halogen bulbs to be too harsh and less inviting than their incandescent counterparts. However, they’re a bit more energy efficient than incandescents.
  • Fluorescent: Most people use fluorescent lights to light up large spaces, like office areas or basements. The light quality tends to be brighter and harsher than other types of bulbs, but you can find some variations. Note that unlike other bulbs, fluorescents cannot be dimmed.
  • LED: Many people opt for LED bulbs because they’re much more energy efficient and last a long time. However, many people still think these bulbs are not up to par when it comes to properly lighting a room.

2. Determine your priorities.

Ask yourself: When my bathroom remodel is complete, what do I want my light fixture to achieve? For example, if your bathroom is dark and gloomy, you may prioritize lighting that brightens up the space and allows you to see yourself when you get ready in the morning. However, you also don’t want a light that’s too harsh so that your bathroom doesn’t feel warm and relaxing. Common considerations include cost, energy efficiency, the light fixture specifications, design, and atmosphere (warmth of the light, whether it hums, etc.).

3. See it in person.

Before purchasing a light fixture or light bulbs, get a feel for your options in person. You may be able to visit a local home improvement or lighting store to get a feel for the various bulbs and even light fixtures.
