Water Heater

How to Know if You Need a New Water Heater

Whether you recently moved into a new home or you’ve been there for a while, you want a water heater you can rely on. Each water heater is built differently and, depending on how well it’s been maintained, can last anywhere from 5 to 20+ years. However, sooner or later, every water heater will come to its end. But how do you know when that day will come? Our plumbers at Indy Renovation shared these tips on how to recognize when a water heater is on its way out.

1. Use your five senses.

Usually, a water heater that’s about to fail starts acting kind of quirky. Using your powers of observation, you can usually pick up on odd noises, smells, or sights coming from the unit or from your pipes. For example, do you hear a lot of clanking and banging coming from your water heater? Does the water heater appear to have a leak? Have you noticed that your bath or sink water is suddenly a bit rusty? These sights and sounds you pick up from your water heater may indicate that it will soon fail.

2. Check the age of the water heater.

Most water heaters come with an owner’s manual, or if you don’t have it, you can usually access it from the manufacturer online. The owner’s manual should list a life expectancy (usually given in a range, such as 5-8 years, etc.). Then, determine what year the unit was installed. If your water heater is about to max out its life expectancy, you’ll want to keep an eye on it or consult a plumber about replacing it.

3. Call a professional plumber.

If you suspect your water heater is about to go but want a second opinion, hire a plumber from Indy Renovation. We can come assess the condition of your water heater and suggest any necessary maintenance or repairs that can extend its life. Or we may also confirm that you want to start shopping for a new one. Either way, you’ll know where you stand and can start preparing.
